The Maldives and its fight to keep afloat for generations to come.

The Maldives is a country made up of islands and surrounded by water, this is why its government is in the forefront of climate change policies. The Maldives and its existence will depend on how the world will do its part in making sure that this weather phenomenon does not get worst otherwise this beautiful island country may become just pictures on travel magazines of what was once a magnificent tropical paradise. Its white sandy beaches and lush tropical vegetation is slowly disappearing, we must do something to preserve the Maldives for future generations to enjoy.

How exactly is the Maldives affected by climate change?
As we all know the Maldives is surrounded by water where the highest point is only 2.3 meters above sea level and the national average is just 1.5 meters above sea level. Ocean levels have been rising at an alarming rate over the last century, global sea levels have risen 20 centimeters and further rises are predicted which could threaten the existence of the Maldives. In November 2008, President Nasheed expressed concerns about global warming and his fear that in time some of the islands in the Maldives maybe submerged with the rising sea level.

What is being done to ensure the future of the Maldives?

Cooperation between nations is imperative if we want to solve this global weather problem, the Maldives has sought the cooperation of the Indian government in sharing technology when it comes to renewable energy sources and environment friendly technology. The Maldives believe that India and Indian companies can play a vital role in the field of technological developments that is good for the environment.

Climate change is upon us whether we like it or not, let us make sure that it does not get any worse, otherwise low lying countries like the Maldives will disappear from the map.

Swedish Scientist Findings: Maldives are Not in Danger of Sinking

A Swedish scientist, a specialist on sea level changes, wrote a letter to President Mohamed Nasheed, explaining that the rising sea levels that he claims threatens to drown the Maldives within the next 50-100 years, was based neither on observational facts nor true scientific judgments.
